Middle School

Middle School at Walford provides a smooth transition between the junior and senior years for students.

Welcome to the Middle School (Years 6-9)

Our Middle School teachers are specially trained to support early adolescents as they take on new challenges and explore the world around them with increased curiosity.

Our Middle School teaching and learning is based on the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP), which provides appropriate breadth, depth and outlook for students of this age group. Individualised programs allow for acceleration, enrichment and support in particular areas.

It is during these years that your daughter develops her values and sense of self. We balance education with leadership opportunities, involvement in physical, cultural and charitable activities, and the development of skills to make and sustain real friendships.

We ensure that all our girls feel welcome and involved in school life. Our Peer Leaders’ Program provides every girl in Years 6 - 8 with a Year 11 mentor. Our mentors are trained to provide support, and become wonderful role models and special friends to their younger peers.

Our students emerge from Middle School confident and ready to meet the challenges of Senior School.

Ensuring a Smooth Transition

Walford’s Middle School curriculum offers balance, rigor and challenge to girls in Years 6 - 9. It provides a smooth and structured transition between the Junior and Senior years, and support and guidance as girls develop their values and sense of self.

Our programs are both comprehensive and flexible. This means we can develop each student’s potential in accordance with her abilities and aspirations, and provide opportunities for extension.

Students in Years 6 - 9 study:

  • English
  • Science
  • Humanities (History and Geography)
  • Religious Education
  • Arts (Drama, Music and Art)
  • Outdoor Education
  • Design and Technology
  • Mathematics
  • Either Chinese or French
  • Health and Physical Education

As part of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, the following areas of interaction are integrated into, and across, the curriculum:

  • Approaches to learning
  • Action and service
  • The Learner Profile

The Personal Project completed in Year 10 draws together the students’ involvement in each of these areas.

Full curriculum details can be found in the Middle School Curriculum Information Book, in the Downloads Section at the bottom of this page.

Engaging Holistically - the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program

Walford is one of a select group of schools throughout the world, and the first girls' school in Australia, to offer all three programs of the International Baccalaureate: the Primary Years Program, the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Program. All students undertake the Primary and Middle Years Programme as their basic curriculum and in Years 11 and 12 can choose between the IB Diploma and the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE).

The MYP is specifically designed to facilitate intellectual development of early adolescent students (11 - 16 year olds). Young people at this stage of their education require an engaging and holistic curriculum that is relevant to the real world issues that concern them. Students develop skills in locating, processing, critically evaluating and communicating information. These skills will serve them well in life and prepare them for future education.

Students are taught to become inquirers, thinkers, communicators, risk-takers, and to be knowledgeable, principled, caring, open-minded, balanced and reflective.
