At Walford we believe students learn from being part of a team, working collaboratively and taking responsibility. Our student leadership program gives students many opportunities to take an active part in the school and to lead others.
Being a leader is not easy and we believe important life skills can be gained from taking on positions of responsibility. Students also benefit from having strong role models amongst their peers.
Middle School Committee
In Year 9 the Middle School Committee, led by the Head of Middle School, takes an important role. Each semester two students are elected from each House Tutor group to form a committee of ten who are responsible for fundraising, representing the School at functions, looking after new students and representing their peers.
Year 10 Class Representative Committee
In Year 10 each House group elects one girl each semester to be on the Year 10 Class Representative Committee, meeting regularly with the Head of Senior School and being the voice of Year 10. These students are also called on to help at school events and attend leadership conferences where appropriate.
Peer Support Leaders
In Year 11 most students choose to be trained as Peer Support Leaders and take on responsibility for a small group of younger girls in their house. They arrange lunches together and quickly become admired mentors to the younger girls.
House Captains, Student Council and Boarding House Captains
Half way through Year 11 we elect our House Captains, Student Council and Boarding House Captains. This enables the Year 12 students in these roles to step down and focus on their study as the end of year approaches. Students wishing to stand for election submit a written application which is put on display. Nominees for Student Council then give short speeches to the Senior School about leadership and nominees for House Captain positions address their Houses. All students in Years 10 - 12 vote for Council and all members of each House vote for House Captain. These are demanding roles requiring considerable commitment and we are proud of how well the students meet their commitments.
Other Leadership Opportunities
We encourage students to nominate for positions of responsibility, such as Captain, in co-curricular activities including sport, music, drama and debating. Each nomination is considered carefully with the final decision being made by the Principal.
